A would-be thief has fled the scene following an attempted bank robbery in Melbourne’s south east.

Police are currently at the Commonwealth Bank branch on McCrae Street at Dandenong.

A man entered the business on Thursday afternoon, approached an employee and handed them a note stating he had a weapon and demanded cash.

The staff activated the bank’s security system and the man fled from the scene.

3AW listener Jamie told Nick McCallum police have saturated the area.

“There’s a lot of people still trying to use the handy bank out the front!”

Investigations are ongoing.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
