Aussie lifesaver tells Ross and John about his experience in Europe
A St Kilda livesaver has saved over 500 asylum seekers attempting to reach Europe.
Simon Lewis was part of an international team of six lifesavers volunteering in Greece, a major landing point for the thousands of Syrians fleeing the conflict zone.
But many of the people seeking asylum ended up in the water, requiring rescue from Mr Lewis and the team.
Mr Lewis told Ross and John it was ‘an emotional journey.’
‘It was quite an experience… meeting a lot of people there, seeing them at their best and at their worst,’ he said.
Mr Lewis said his success shows the quality of the training lifesavers receive in Australia.
‘If you learn it here, you can take it anywhere in the world.’
