Australia at risk of being left behind as EU announces 2035 petrol car ban
The European Union has moved to ban the sale of new cars and vans powered by fossil fuels by 2035, and Australia has been warned to raise its fuel efficiency standards or be left behind.
Australia’s efficiency regulation lags behind that in many other countries, and it means we’re not receiving many electric vehicles, with countries which impose tough fines for exceeding emission targets receiving the bulk of zero-emissions vehicles.
Chief executive of the Electric Vehicle Council, Behyad Jafari, says Australia is “a little bit of a standout”, and “the rest of the world is much further along”.
