Australia Day: Date change will cause more division and bitterness

Changing the date of Australia Day now will do more harm than good, according to Neil Mitchell.

On 3AW Mornings, Neil said he was surprised to find himself agreeing with former PM Tony Abbott’s views on our national day.

“I’m not usually a great fan of his writing,” Neil said.

“Tony Abbott is right, we’ve got 364 other days to tear each other a part.

“I think changing the date now would cause more division and bitterness that not.”

“Of course awful things happened to indigenous people,” Neil said.

“I think it’ll be an awfully divisive week, there will be some ugly scenes on Australia Day.”
