Incoming Defence Chief Angus Campbell has banned Australian soldiers from using death-style iconography in the army.

Symbols including the grim reaper, skull and cross bones, and the Spartans have been banned, with Lieutenant General Campbell stating that the symbols are at odds with army values.

Ross and John spoke to Walkley award-winning defence author, Ian McPhedran, about the ban.

Mr McPhedran said it’s “a very tricky issue”.

“I can understand where Campbell is coming from in terms of making sure that the image of the army is a professional one, rather than some kind of Rambo-esque fighting outfit,” he said.
