Australian boxing legend Johnny Famechon has died aged 77.

Born in Paris, Famechon migrated to Australia at the age of five.

He became Lineal and WBC featherweight champion in 1969 after he defeated the Cuban José Legrá on points at the Albert Hall in London.

Famechon retired from boxing aged 25.

In 1991 he was hit by a car in Sydney, which caused a stroke and resulted in an acquired brain injury.

“He was an absolute ripper John Famechon,” Jon ‘Ando’ Anderson said.

“I’m really saddened to hear of his death.”
