Celebrated Australian rock star Jon English has died.

English, 66, is believed to have died following complications from recent surgery.

Molly Meldrum told 3AW News it was a sad day for the showbiz industry.

‘He was an absolute joy to be with and an absolute character that made everyone smile,’ Meldrum said.

‘I never heard Jon ever, ever say a bad word about anything, or anyone.’

Peter Ford broke the news on 3AW Breakfast.

‘He never gave up on his dreams and ideas and they’re the people in show business I really admire,’ he said.

English carved out a successful career both on television and on the stage, starring in the big hit Jesus Christ Superstar.
