Victorian paramedics have the highest rate of work injuries of all workers in the country, new research has revealed.

Psychological reasons rather than physical injuries make up the bulk of Victorian paramedic work injuries, according to a Monash University study.

About one-in-three Victorian paramedics have suffered injuries at work and a tenth of those needed time off work.

Secretary of the Victorian Ambulance Union, Danny Hill, says burnout is likely one of the most common workplace injuries among paramedics.

“We have to reduce the workload on them. Right now about two out of 10 patients that paramedics are going to require any form of paramedic intervention … that’s really sort of increasing the workload and increasing the strain on them but it’s really not their work they should be doing.
