Some big-name Australian politicians are turning to TikTok to help try and secure the Gen Z vote, but they’ve been accused of trying “a little bit too hard” by a social media guru.

Tom Elliott agrees.

“I wasted some time watching a few of them. Some of them are very cringeworthy,” the 3AW Drive host said on Friday.

Demelza Leonard from DL social said it appeared politicians had “learned” from the last election and were attempting to make up for it.

“Social media really is a platform they should be on, but what we are seeing here is that they’re really not connecting in the way that they should be, particularly as TikTok is used so highly by the 13 to 24 demographic and for a lot of those within that 18-24 demographic, this is their first time of voting.

“They’re really not connecting in the way they should be with that audience.”

She said it undoubtedly had the ability to work in securing votes.

“I think what is coming across is that they are trying a little bit too hard and, you know, the younger audience can see right through it,” she said.
