Authorities could soon be given the go-ahead to shutdown illegal movie download websites

MML

The film industry is hopeful Australia could soon shake the unwanted tag of being among the world’s piracy hotspots.

A court ruling is due to be handed down within weeks, giving authorities the green light to shut down as many as 100 sites.

Illegally downloading films as almost doubled with teens aged 12-17.

3AW News spoke with Village Roadshow boss Graham Burke, he says it’ll be a bit like whack-a-mole as the illegal sites attempt to re-appear under different names.

‘It’s going to become a space that will be very hard to navigate, and as they come back up, we’ll knock them back down again.’

The verdict could potentially boost services such as Netflix, Stan and Presto, giving movie pirates no other option.
