The awkward exchange between Malcolm Turnbull and James Merlino shows “just how touchy” the Victorian government is about law and order, says one political analyst.

The Prime Minister and acting Premier were holding a joint press conference at Geelong on Wednesday to announce plans to splash about $20 million on infrastructure projects.

Speaking on 3AW Mornings, Dr Nick Economou – senior lecturer in Australian politics at Monash University – said it highlighted just how nervous the state government was at present.

“The government feels it’s on top of the policy debate in many ways, except in this area of law and order,” he explained.

“The things that have occurred over the summer could not have been worse timed for the state government.

“They’re clearly touchy on this matter.

“Yesterday’s exchange revealed how touchy they are.”
