Bargain price Victorian rock lobster as industry ‘battles it out’

With the Victorian rock lobster season opening today, it’s time to nab a bargain.

Victorian rock lobster prices are expected to fall to $70 a kilogram this month.

Two years ago, they were selling for $140 a kilogram.

The price plummet comes as China’s ban on imports of the crustacean continues.

San Remo lobster fisher and member of Seafood Industry Victoria, Matthew Harry, says the industry has been “battling it out”.

“We are finding other markets: Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, even America is starting to buy a few, but more importantly the local market is starting to buy a few,” he told Ross and Russel.

But Mr Harry says Victorians hoping to snap up a cheap lobster should do so soon.

“There will be increased demand leading up to Christmas this year, so now is a great time with great prices to get hold of a lobster,” he said.
