A staggering $826 has been spent on a taxi to transport queen bees from Glenrowan to Traralgon.

The pricey cab trip was sought by Bega Cheese — which makes Australian B Honey — after Australia Post delivery delays during the pandemic led to the monarchs dying en route.

Beekeeper and director of Monson’s Honey & Pollination in Mildura, Trevor Monson, says it’s not unusual for honey producers to go to extreme lengths to safely transport queen bees.

“This time if the year it’s probably not so important but during the summer, when it’s really hot, queens can die during the post,” he told Stephen Quartermain and Emily Power, filling in for Ross and Russel.

“Years ago I actually chartered a plane and flew to Wangaratta and brought back a thousand!”
