After more than 40 years sticking up for Victoria’s youth, Bernie Geary has more than done his bit.

He will retire as Victoria’s Commissioner for Children and Young People on Friday.

Mr Geary’s been a tireless advocate for kids, as an outreach worker, social worker and then as Child Safety Commissioner in 2005.

Neil Mitchell caught up with him the day before it all came to a close.

And the interview started with a trip down memory lane…

Neil Mitchell: ‘Do you remember why you once called Jamie Oliver a d***head on this program?’

Bernie Geary: ‘I do, I do.’
