Scientists say they have taken a big step towards finding a cure for the common cold.

The London scientists have tested a treatment that targets human cells rather than the virus itself.

Roberto Solari, visiting fellow at the National Heart and Lung Institute, told Ross and John the next challenge is to test the compound in human trials.

“Before going into people we have to do safety and toxicology studies to show that it’s safe to administer to people,” he said.

“But at the moment we’re reasonably optimistic; it doesn’t look like a toxic compound.”
