The massive Broadmeadows tyre fire that covered several suburbs in smoke could be burning until Wednesday.

About 60 firefighters battled the fire throughout the night

It continues to burn, although the amount of smoke has decreased significantly and nearby business are expected to reopen.

Smoke from the Maygar Boulevard blaze, which started about 9am, could be seen from as far as the Morning Peninsula.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

The fire is well clear of homes, but there was a Watch and Act warning for residents at Broadmeadows, Campbellfield, Coolaroo, Dallas, Fawkner, Gladstone Park, Glenroy, Gowanbrae, Hadfield, Jacana, Lalor, Meadow Heights, Reservoir, Thomastown and Westmeadows.

Nearby residents have been advised to close windows and turn off air-conditioning.
