Spencer Street has been re-opened after a dangling sheet of glass caused massive CBD traffic disruptions this afternoon.

A crane lifting the load broke down, forcing authorities to evacuate the road and paths between Lonsdale and La Trobe streets about midday.

VicRoads re-opened Spencer Street about 2.30pm in time for peak hour.

The work was part of the construction on the new Victoria Police complex.

The load is believed to weigh as much as three tonnes.

The footpath below has been blocked while crews work to fix the problem.
