Melbourne has woken to its coldest morning of the year.

But it could be worse — temperatures are below freezing in some parts of the state.

The city dropped to a low of 3.1° about 5.30am, with a ‘feels like’ temperature of just 1.1° at 7am.

The mercury fell to just 1° at Moorabbin Airport, and at Viewbank in Melbourne’s north-east it was close close to freezing; a temperature of 0.9° and a feels like temperature of -1.3°.

Around the state Ballarat has dipped to -2°, and at Horsham it’s -1°.

In the alps it is as low -4°.

But there’s a nice day ahead in Melbourne, with an expected maximum of 15°.

“It will be a lovely afternoon with lots of sunshine,” Channel 7’s Jane Bunn said.
