A council in Melbourne’s north has been overruled by the planning minister, with a 10-storey apartment development given the green light.

Merri-Bek council rejected a plan for the Princes Park Motor Inn site at 609-703 Park Street in Brunswick, in part because the development would dominate a heritage-listed power substation on the site.

But developer Mirvac lodged plans with Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny to have the project fast-tracked, and they were approved.

Councillor of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, Elisabeth Jackson, says the substaton will be “completely dwarfed” by the development.

“It is socially and historically significant. It is a cute little building if you look at it,” she said.
