Planned burn-offs are causing a smoky haze over Melbourne.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Chris Eagle told Neil Mitchell it’s an unfortunate side-effect of keeping the community safe during fire season.

“It’s no worse than other years,” Mr Eagle said.

“It’s intensified this morning because conditions overnight kept the smoke down low.”

The burn-offs are happening later this year due to the summer conditions being particularly dry.

“We would normally be nearly finished by now,” Mr Eagle said.

He said the burns will continue for “a couple of weeks”.
