Footy fans are gearing up for this weekend’s preliminary finals, with decorations popping up in front yards and on fences across the state.

The Demons take on Geelong in Perth tonight, and Neil Mitchell has been sent a photo of a Melbourne Football Club President Kate Roffey holding the flag that flew on the MCC roof during the 1964 grand final.

The flag spent almost 50 years at the bottom of a plastic bag in storage at the home of former 3AW Breakfast co-host John Burns.

His father gifted it to him in 1964 after being given it by a work colleague whose son had scaled the MCC members roof and taken the flag.

Burnso used it as a bedspread as a teenager, but when he moved out of the family home it was forgotten and put into storage – until now!
