An Uber driver and taxi operator have had a fiery clash on 3AW Mornings over the controversial ride-sharing service.

Neil Mitchell pitted Mark Smith (taxi owner) and Mike Burns (Uber driver) against each other to find out what all the fuss was about.

Mr Smith said cabs simply wanted a level playing field.

‘They’re charging people to take them from one place to another,’ he said.

‘Forget the sharing economy ? it’s got nothing to do with it ? it’s a business and they should be regulated with exactly the same regulations as the taxi industry.’

But Mr Burns questioned that argument.

‘Maybe not the same regulations, because we are safer and more reliable and cheaper.’

That left Mr Smith far from impressed.

‘I beg your pardon?’ he said.
