Calls for councils to have greater control on speed limits in their local area
An experiment on the Mornington Peninsula could hold the key to reducing the road toll.
The council has cut speed limits on 33 local roads from 100 kilometres down to 80.
In 2019, six people died on council roads with another 100 seriously injured, and Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Steve Holland claims there’s been no deaths since the change.

Liberal Member for Kew, Jess Wilson, welcomes the idea of local councils having greater control on speed limits in their own area.
Ms Wilson sits on the Economic and Infrastructure Committee looking into road safety behaviour, and claims the Department of Transport always say “it doesn’t meet their specific requirements” when prompted to give local councils more control on speed limits.
