A Western Australian MP is calling for a government crack down on overseas tourists driving unsafely on our roads.

James Purcell, from the Vote 1 Local Jobs party, is calling for mandatory license testing for overseas drivers visiting Australia temporarily.

He told Ross and John there are significant safety concerns when foreign drivers who are unfamiliar with road rules will routinely drive on the wrong side of the road, lose concentration and even drive around roundabouts the wrong way.

‘Traditionally when [tourists] came over they went in big buses and stayed in the motels in Melbourne,’ he said. ‘Now they’ve actually moved into the self drive market.’

Mr Purcell said Australian driving rules are different to roads throughout Asia.
