There are calls to radically shake-up the education system with a “master teacher” category.

Under the plan proposed by the Grattan Institute, teachers at the top of their field would  be responsible for improving teaching and command a salary of up to $180,000 per year.

Jordana Hunter, Education Program Director at Grattan Institute, told Tom Elliott said there’s a strong case for paying “exceptional” teachers at a much higher pay rate.

“Like any workforce, some teachers are more effective than others,” she said on 3AW Drive.

“Some teachers have had more opportunity to hone their craft further and do more professional development.

“There’s certainly a cohort of teachers that are incredibly exceptional, we want to make sure we are using those teachers effectively as possible.”
