Calls to ban free toys being used to sell junk foods
There are calls for a ban on free toys being used to sell unhealthy foods in Australia.
It would spell the end of the McDonald’s Happy Meal toy and Kinder Surprises.
Jane Martin from the Obesity Policy Coalition told Tom Elliott research had shown that regardless of whether a food was healthy or not, the toy was often a driving factor for children wanting it.
She said toys should be used to sell healthy food instead.
“It showed that it really influenced what children want and that they were much more likely to choose either of those meals if they were tied to a free movie character toy,” Ms Martin explained.
