Calls to ban masks at protests

Leading police figures say it’s time to discuss changing the law to make it illegal to wear a mask at a protest.

It follows more violence at a Halal food festival at Ascot Vale over the weekend.

Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said while a blanket ban on balaclavas and masks wouldn’t work, it was time for police and government to get together to come up with a solution.

‘There’s not much we can do at the moment, unfortunately,’ he said.
