New data released by the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission shows a significant demand for illicit substances in our community, notably a percentage increase in heroin use.

In a discussion on 3AW Mornings, CEO of the Victorian Alcohol and Drug Association, Chris Christofrou, argued that police resources should be used more effectively rather than just charging individual users.

Tom Elliott disagreed, criticising the lack of consequences for people who use drugs.

“What would happen is that our prisons and court systems would be choked by the vast number of people that are currently using illicit drugs,” Christofrou said.
