Car smashes into tree following a police pursuit at Melton

A car has lost control and smashed into a tree following a police chase at Melton.

Police had tried to get a black BMW to pull over around 11.45 this morning, but the driver took off. 

In a statement, police say officers activated their lights and sirens and initiated a pursuit. 

The BMW crashed into a tree on Exford Road, with the driver’s side taking the impact. 

A male driver suffered serious injuries.

Ambulance Victoria confirming the man was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition. 

Police remain at the scene, investigations now underway.
