The cost of catching a cab to Melbourne Airport is about to get more expensive.

From next month, the airport will charge taxi drivers $3.58 to use its ranks.

It’s an 88% increase.

That toll will be added to the metered fare for passengers.

Consumer advocate Gerard Brody told Neil Mitchell there’s nothing we can do about it.

‘The nub of the problem is a monopoly power exercised by the airport in setting fees and charges,’ he said.

Mr Brody, the CEO of the Consumer Action Law Centre, said the airport’s increase in car parking revenue was the highest that any monitored airport has ever reported.

‘One of the difficulties is that we don’t have effective regulation to keep check on monopoly power,’ he said.
