Catholic Church sets out strict new directive on scattering of ashes

The Vatican has set out strict new rules on cremation, including a ban on having ashes put into jewellery or kept in an urn.

Father Kevin Dillon told Tom Elliott he wasn’t surprised the church had moved to clarify its position.

‘It’s a more of establishing a sense of tradition where they see the respect that’s been there for years,’ he said on 3AW Drive.

‘I think it’s an attempt to say putting ashes into jewellery…is going a  bit beyond the pale.

‘Up until 40-50 years ago cremation was banned, for common sense reasons that ban has been removed but it has moved into an area for what (some) would see as strange behaviour.’
