‘Challenging’: Expert weighs in on newly proposed SRL value capture tax
Speculation regarding the Suburban Rail Loop’s funding is growing following reports the state government is considering slugging homeowners with a new value capture tax.
PhD researcher at the centre for urban research at RMIT University Dr Eric Keys says while the tax is good in theory, but challenging in practice and potentially not necessary.
“The government already has 10 taxes they apply to land … as the value of land goes up, the government will automatically collect more money,” he said.
