Changes to sperm donation legislation will ‘stop men from donating’
Tom Elliott fears changes to legislation, which allows Victorians conceived by egg or sperm donation to discover the identity of their donor, will stop people from donating.
The legislative council passed an amendment on Tuesday night, which will come into effect on March 1, 2017.
It will allow those born before 1998 to access information about their donor with the donor’s consent.
But the 3AW Drive host wasn’t sure it was a good idea, given those people donated under the premise they’d remain anonymous.
‘I really don’t think it’s a good idea,’ Tom Elliott said.
‘I think it will stop men from donating sperm.’
Hayley Smith, 26, was donor conceived and admitted she’d like to meet her biological father.
‘I think I would one day,’ she said on 3AW Drive.
‘It’s obviously pretty tough and it would be a little weird, but obviously there’s questions only he could be able to answer about my family history.’
