Charities beg Victorian government not to impose ‘absurd’ tax
Charities are begging the state government to reverse a decision to impose an “absurd” additional tax from July 1, which will cost the sector $1.5 million.

The Andrews government will wind back waste levy protections for charity shops, forcing them to pay tax on dumped waste sent to landfill.
Charitable Recycling Australia CEO Omer Sokar says Victorian Environment Minister Ingrid Stitt has been approached about the tax at least nine times but has refused to meet with him.
“We don’t own the waste, we don’t want the waste, it’s illegally dumped on us. Why are we being taxed?,” he told Neil Mitchell.
“If charities have to find cost savings to pay this new Victorian government tax that’s 428,000 meals that cannot be provided to Victorians in need.”
