Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton will not return to the top job until next year, taking a period of leave to deal with an illness.

On doctor’s advice, Mr Ashton will take 3-6 weeks leave to deal with a fatigue-related illness.

“Unfortunately I have allowed myself to become rundown, both physically and mentally and now need to take a short break to recover,” he said.

“In relation to mental health, I have continually encouraged all Victoria Police staff to speak up when they are struggling, and to get the support they need as early as possible.”

Deputy Commissioner Andrew Crisp and Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton will stand in for the Chief Commissioner.
