Chinese students studying at overseas universities have been ordered to return to face-to-face learning this year.

The Chinese Service Centre for Scholarly Exchange says degrees will no longer be recognised in the country if they’re undertaken online.

CEO of the International Education Association of Australia, Phil Honeywood, isn’t surprised China is cracking down on online learning.

“China has never liked online learning … historically under the Confucius principle they’re strong believers in the relationship between the academic student and the teacher,” he told Ross and Russel.

Of the 140,000 foreign students enrolled at Victorian universities, 32,000 are currently studying online and most of those are from China.
