A message claiming to be from the Chinese embassy has been targeting Australian phone numbers.

Neil Mitchell said he received a call from an unknown number which then left a message on his voicemail in Chinese.

3AW Mornings received a number of calls from listeners saying they too received the message.

Caller Garth said he received the message on Skype and the number had a Beijing area code.

Sheree then called and translated the message for Neil.

“It says it’s from the Chinese embassy,” she said.

“And you’ve got a very important document.”
