A city bus lane has crumbled after heavy rainfall on Thursday.

The lane near the corner of Nicholson St and Victoria Pde appears to have broken apart on the part laid on top of bluestone gutter, rather than that laid over the existing road.

Tom Elliott isn’t sure why Australian road-making lags far behind the best in the world.

Director of Road Operations at VicRoads Nick Fisher said there have been a couple of issues with the new bus lanes.

Mr Fisher said this can happen when the flexible pavement is put on a rigid surface.

He denied that the contract had just been issued to the cheapest offer.
