City loop gets connected with phone reception
The wait for phone reception in the city loop is finally over.
After days of testing the technology has finally been turned.
Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan will join train operators and mobile phone carriers to make the official announcement today.
All 12 kilometres of the rail tunnel, and underground stations can now access high quality 3G voice and 4G data coverage.
Plans for mobile phone coverage in the city loop first started under the previous Napthine government but faced multiple delays.
The system mirrors those used in the Hong Kong, Singapore and Montreal underground rail systems.
More work is expected over the next 18 months to further increase capacity and data speeds.
