The City of Melbourne will consider changing the date for Australia Day following findings of a council report in which 59.8 per cent supported a decision to move the date.

Tom Elliott fears changing the date could cause huge fractures in society without really thinking through the consequences.

“There will always be some groups that will argue with whatever date or whatever type of celebration that you pick,” he said.

First Nations advocate Peter Mousaferiadis believes the date can be changed and everyone can be pleased.

“The hallmark of any successful democratic society is when its representing and when its including all its people,” he said.
