An inner city council will call on the state government to enact legislation for a pill testing trial.

City of Port Phillip councillors voted at a council meeting last night to allow a pilot program to take place within the municipality.

Cr Dick Gross was behind the motion, and told 3AW Breakfast the council is home to entertainment precincts, clubs and events like the St Kilda Festival where pill testing could take place.

‘It’s starting a conversation with the state government about changing the law,’ he said.

‘And funding a pilot program in the City of Port Phillip to test pills and party drugs to make sure those people who intend to use them know about the strength of the drugs and contaminants that are in there.’
