City of Sydney votes to offer free weddings – to same-sex couples only
The City of Sydney will offer free weddings for 100 days if same-sex marriage is legalised.
But the offer is only extended to same-sex couples.
Tom Elliott said it goes against the whole point of marriage “equality”.
“To me, it’s like trying to stop discrimination with a big dollop of more discrimination,” Tom said.
The Sydney council passed the motion on Monday night, but one of the dissenting councillors said it’s “wrong”.
Cr Christine Forster told Tom she voted against the motion.
“It goes very much against the core values of the equality campaign, which is that we are all equal,” Cr Forster said.
“This is about equal rights, not special rights.”
