CityLink fine system set for major shake-up

Motorists could soon be spared multiple fines per week for making unpaid trips on CityLink.

The proposal snuck through with little fanfare during yesterday’s announcement surrounding Transurban and West Gate Tunnel.

Currently, a fine of $350 is issued to a driver for each day of unauthorised travel on Transurban toll roads.

But under proposed legislation, a driver who doesn’t pay to use CityLink any number of days in one week, would only be fined once for that week.

Damian Stock from Victorian Legal Aid told 3AW Mornings that weekly, rather than daily fines, made sense.

“Once people receive more than about five fines they stop paying attention and think a $2000 debt might as well be a $200,000 debt – I can’t pay it,” he explained.

“It defeats the purpose of the infringement system.”

He said it would keep drivers out of the court system, freeing it up for other legal matters.
