An anti gay marriage advocate has debated the issue of same-sex marriage and the plebiscite on 3AW Mornings.

It comes after Opposition Leader Bill Shorten announced yesterday Labor would block the same-sex marriage plebiscite in the Senate, saying he could ‘not in good conscience’ support it.

Columnist with The Australian Angela Shanahan, who has a gay son, says she didn’t oppose civil unions.

But she said she didn’t believe they should be on the same ‘legal and moral plane’ as marriage between a heterosexual couple.

‘In a nutshell only heterosexual relationships can of themselves produce a child,’ she said.

‘So therefore marriage is naturally heterosexual, it aways has been.’
