The accommodation industry is calling for a crackdown on how Airbnb is regulated.

The popular website, which allows travellers to hire out homes for short-term accommodation, has come under fire for not having to abide by rules or standards.

Neil Mitchell spoke to Carol Giuseppe, CEO of Tourism Accommodation Australia, who says some of the properties are unsafe as they don’t comply with industry standards such as fire and safety access, public liability and food and safety standards.

‘There are a large numbers of providers who are non-residential hosts, who have multiple listings,’ she said. ‘Within that they’re not abiding by the current regulations.’

‘What we’re looking for is overall findings on this so that there is a level of registration.’
