Concern over cab driver claims at Melbourne Airport
Cab drivers are being moved on from the taxi rank at Melbourne Airport by security, with claims the guards are telling would-be passengers to download the Uber app.
The issue was aired on The Rumour File, with Transport Matters Party leader Rod Barton telling Neil Mitchell he was also aware of the problem.
“It’s been an ongoing complaint for some time now, since Uber paid to have the taxi rank removed, so they could move in,” he said.

Melbourne Airport said in a statement the “only taxis” stopped from picking up passengers were those who hadn’t followed procedures.
“Of which taxi drivers are well aware,” the statement read.
“Taxi drivers entering the airport directly and not via the holding area have become an increasing problem and it’s unfair to the taxi drivers who do follow procedure.
“When there are no taxis available at the ranks or queued in the holding area, we call the various taxi companies and request taxis to Melbourne Airport. If there are not enough taxis available to meet customer demand, we let customers know about alternative transport options (such as SkyBus or Uber).”
