Victoria’s current birthrate is now lower than the entirety of the nation was during the pandemic.

Demographer and author, Claire Madden believes the reasons might include the prioritisation of career over children as well as climate change.

“Climate change certainly is a situation that gen z and gen y, millennials have taken on as a reason to not have children,” Ms Madden told Neil Mitchell.

Press PLAY to hear why Victoria’s birthrate is declining.

“While Melbourne is lower than Sydney, I think career is a big, big part of this decline that we’re seeing,” Ms Madden said.

Cost of living, lag effect of the pandemic, economic uncertainty, choosing to have kids later in life, fertility issues, were also possible reasons given.
