There’s concern around a deal Western Australia has made with a Chinese telecommunications giant.

Huawei has won a $136-million contract to roll-out voice and data systems in trains on Perth’s rail network.

The same company was blocked from building the NBN due to security concerns.

WA’s Shadow Minister for IT Bill Marmion tells Chris Kenny Huawei’s involvement in this project should be limited.

“Any contract that has state or government involved, that has some sensitivity around strategy and security, the Commonwealth Government needs to come in and provide written assurance that the actual proponent is a safe entity.

“If the actual data that they end up controlling is actually then available to overseas organisations, we question why … where security is an issue, why you wouldn’t have perhaps considered an Australian company.”
