Concerns some Victorian classrooms may hinder learning

There are concerns hundreds of Victorian children may be forced to learn in noisy, outdated open-plan classrooms.
New research indicates open-plan classrooms result in poorer learning outcomes for many students, and the NSW government has recently moved to stop building open-plan classrooms, but there are concerns many Victorian classrooms — including some constructed recently — are built in the outdated design.
Education program director at the Grattan Institute, Jordana Hunter, says “Having students sitting at a desk with a really clear line of sight on the teacher and making sure they’re close enough and noise levels are managed so they can hear the teacher, that’s definitely the type of condition that promotes the best learning outcomes”.
