CONFIRMED: Police officers allegedly kicked, punched after welfare check on Newport home

Two police officers were allegedly punched and kicked last night after being called out to conduct a welfare check in Newport.
It’s understood the nightshift van was called to a house in Collingwood Road at 12.30am this morning.
Police say a man came out of the house before allegedly punching and kicking the officers.
OC spray was used.
Neil Mitchell said it’s believed the officers were conducting the check on a heavily pregnant woman.
Police say a woman who appeared from the house hindered police.
The male senior constable, believed to be aged in his 30s, received black eyes, facial injuries, sprains and bruising to his body.
A female leading senior constable received facial injuries and strains to her neck and back.
Both of the officers were taken to hospital, but have since been released.
A 40-year-old Newport man was arrested at the scene and is currently under police guard in hospital.
The investigation continues.
