RUMOUR CONFIRMED

Two police officers were allegedly punched and kicked last night after being called out to conduct a welfare check in Newport.

It’s understood the nightshift van was called to a house in Collingwood Road at 12.30am this morning.

Police say a man came out of the house before allegedly punching and kicking the officers.

OC spray was used.

Neil Mitchell said it’s believed the officers were conducting the check on a heavily pregnant woman.

Police say a woman who appeared from the house hindered police.

The male senior constable, believed to be aged in his 30s, received black eyes, facial injuries, sprains and bruising to his body.

A female leading senior constable received facial injuries and strains to her neck and back.

Both of the officers were taken to hospital, but have since been released.

A 40-year-old Newport man was arrested at the scene and is currently under police guard in hospital.

The investigation continues.
